Abstract
Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of the hypopressive exercises (HE) in women with mild pelvic organ prolapse (POP). Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively using the data of 25 women who were diagnosed with stage 1,2 POP and treated as two groups [Group 1: Pelvic Floor Muscle Training (PFMT) (n = 10), Group 2: PFMT combined with HE (n = 15)]. EMG device was used to assess pelvic floor muscle (PFM) activation responses (EMG-work average and EMG-rest average); total score of Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20) and its all sub-scales [Pelvic Organ Prolapse Distress Inventory-6 (POPDI-6), Colorec-tal-Anal Distress Inventory-8 (CRADI-8) and Urinary Distress Inventory-6 (UDI-6)] were used to assess severity of pelvic floor dysfunction. The assessments were performed at baseline and at week 8. Results: While there were statistically significant differences in both groups in EMG-work average, PFDI-20, POPDI-6 and UDI-6 (p < 0.05), there were no significant differences in any outcome measurements between the groups at week 8 (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that HE applied in addition to PFMT did not have an additional healing effect on PFM activation and severity of PFD in women with mild POP.
